About the course.
This course offers a good level of individual attention (max 4 delegates) and the chance to interact with actual CBT students on the final day.
The course is designed to help you prepare for the DSA’s 2 day Cardington examination or to help you become a Down-trained instructor, including all the CBT Elements, supervising other instructors (an area many fail the Cardington exam on), fault finding and correction, on-road radio work and much advice about how to pass, and how to succeed as an instructor after passing. (Further training for the DAS Assessment is available as a separate course to you in the future).
It is very much an interactive course, not just ‘talk and chalk’, with lots of participation both physical and mental, and should be very enjoyable. Once booked on a course you will be sent an Instructor Pack containing a course overview, CBT syllabus, pre-course preparation notes, directions and details of accommodation (if required). All courses are subject to our standard Terms & Conditions. 'All instructors were knowledgeable, friendly and the course was well structured and 'hands on'. The price was extremely reasonable considering the amount of time and effort in running the course.' Chris, Feb 2008
' ...a very relaxed atmosphere and great fun. I thoroughly enjoyed it and learnt lots.'Rick, Feb 2008
So, what's it like being an
instructor?
Training students to ride motorcycles and scooters is not a job for shy or nervous types. As a motorcycle instructor you'll need to be confident of speaking in front of others, patient, observant, quick-thinking and professional. A passion and enthusiasm for motorcycling is essential, as is a good sense of humour.
The rewards of teaching are tremendous, and for teaching such an enjoyable and life-changing subject even more so. There is a real chance to encourage and influence the bikers of the future and to help them enjoy an exhilarating pursuit safely. There is nothing quite like seeing the sense of achievement in people's eyes when they realise they are finally riding a motorbike and realising their dream.
Your ability to ride a motorcycle is not on test but it will need to be second nature so you can concentrate on keeping your students safe. Also demonstrations form an important part of the training process, so you need to be able to do it as well as teach it.
You need to be able to learn and follow a syllabus set by The Driving Standards Agency (DSA) to train novice riders up to Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) standard. Safety of yourself, your students and others is paramount at all times.
Job Opportunity.
Dexterity Motorcycle Training has undergone an exciting period of expansion, and we're still growing! We are therefore looking for new motorcycle instructors to maintain our high standards.
We carefully consider the potential instructors we see on our courses, with a view to offering them a position as an instructor with us. Initially on a part-time, self employed basis normally, with flexible working days and the chance of further progression within the organisation for those who want it.
From the course we ran in February we took on two out of the five people as instructors with us!
Please note, The DSA have to approve all motorcycle instructors and they are unlikely to agree to the suitability of applicants with more than 5 points on their licence or who've been convicted of certain criminal offences.
We also welcome applications from part or fully qualified instructors looking for a change, all applications will be treated in absolute confidence of course.
If you're interested in attending one of our instructor training courses, or you'd like to talk to someone to find out more, then give us a call on (01233) 621 536.
More about the DSA 2 day ‘Cardington’ Assessment The course above is designed to help you prepare for the DSA's 2 day assessment at their site at Cardington, Bedfordshire. But just what is this assessment? This takes place over a two-day period. Candidates are split into groups of 2 or 3 and an assessor plays the role of a novice rider with candidates instructing a CBT over the two days. When not instructing an exercise the other candidates should be making notes of the instruction taking place in order to provide constructive supervisory feedback when asked by the assessor. This supervisory element is being assessed and constitutes half of the marks.
The assessor marks each exercise as either 4 (excellent), 3 (satisfactory), 2 (unsatisfactory), or 1 (poor) under either the instructional or supervisory column for each candidate as appropriate. Scoring a 2 more than once or twice is likely to result in a fail, scoring a 1 at any stage is an automatic fail, so obviously candidates should aim to score threes and fours.
Both parts, (instructional and supervisory), have to be passed in order to pass the whole assessment, failing either one would result in failing the whole assessment. A down-trained instructor who fails the instructional part would also have their down-trained certificate revoked. A maximum of two attempts at the assessment can be made before being time-barred for 12 months following the second unsuccessful attempt. The DSA are keen to point out that Cardington is an assessment and not a training course.
The different levels of instructor. The course above is also designed to help you become a downtrained instructor. But just what do the terms, down-trained, CBT1C and DAS mean?
Down-trained Trained and assessed by a ‘Cardington’ qualified instructor at an ATB (Authorised Training Body), and successfully applied to the DSA for a ‘Down-trained’ Certificate under their ‘fit and proper’ policy. Down-trained instructors are permitted to train at Compulsory Basic Training (CBT) level only within the ATB that trained them.
CBT1C Attended the DSA centre at Cardington, Bedfordshire, and passed the DSA two-day assessment. CBT1C instructors cantrain at CBT level and down-train other instructors. This is the minimum qualification to hold an Approved Training Body Status (ATB).
DAS It involves successfully completing a further 4 hour assessment at the DSA Centre at Cardington. This assessment isonly open to CBT1C Certificate holders. This permits you to train DAS in addition to CBT. (DAS stands for Direct Access Scheme)
All courses are subject to our standard Terms & Conditions.
